The Conficker worm is a computer worm that can infect your computer and spread itself to other computers across a network automatically, without human interaction.

What does the Conficker worm do?

To date, security researchers have discovered two variants of the worm in the wild.
•Win32/Conficker.A was reported to Microsoft on November 21, 2008.
•Win32/Conficker.B was reported to Microsoft on December 29, 2008.
•Win32/Conficker.C was reported to Microsoft on February 20, 2009.
•Win32/Conficker.D was reported to Microsoft on March 4, 2009.

Win32/Conficker.B might spread through file sharing and via removable drives, such as USB drives (also known as thumb drives). The worm adds a file to the removable drive so that when the drive is used, the AutoPlay dialog will show one additional option.

The Conficker worm can also disable important services on your computer.

Generations of mobile communications

The first generation (1G) of mobile communications was introduced in the late 1970s; it was primarily used for voice transfer. The next generation of mobile communications is 3G and this delivers data speeds from 384 kbps to 2 Mbps and over wireless interfaces such as GSM, TDMA and CDMA.

New Species Of Peccary -- Pig-like Animal -- Discovered In Amazon Region

This species has been christened giant peccary (Pecari maximus) by the researchers on account of its size. The holotype of the species can be found in the museum of the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia (INPA) in Manaus. The giant peccary was known by the local Tupi Indians as Caitetú Mundè, which means ‘great peccary which lives in pairs’.

Peccaries belong to the pig family from the New World (Tayassuidae). Until recently, the species consisted of three types: the collared peccary, the white-lipped peccary and the Chaccoan peccary. In his contacts with local hunters in area of the Rio Aripuanã basin, Van Roosmalen came across three hides of a species of peccary which he had encountered several times in the local jungle, and which differed strongly from the collared peccary which was also indigenous to the area.

The measurements of the body and the skull confirmed that the new species is larger than the other peccary species. The giant peccary has comparatively longer legs and its fur markings are also completely different. The skull sizes of the giant peccary also appear to differ from the other species. Genetic analysis indicates a divergence time with the collared and white-lipped peccary of between one and 1.2 million years. The giant peccary occurs sympatrically with the white-lipped and collared species, in other words they are found in the same region.

The new species also exhibits very different behaviour from its family members, the white-lipped and collared peccaries. These species are found in large to very large groups (even up to hundreds of individual animals in the case of the white-lipped peccary), while the giant peccary is only found in pairs or in small family groups with one or two offspring. The other peccary types root in the ground for seeds and roots.

The giant peccary eats mainly fruit and exhibits little or no rooting behaviour. The habitat of the giant peccary is limited to terra firme, dry wooded areas, in a small region of the basin of the Rio Aripuanã. The researchers therefore expect the giant peccary population to be small, and they recommend that this new species should be placed on the Red List of threatened species of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

Van Roosmalen has previously discovered new types of primates, including two species of titi monkeys, one of which is the Callicebus bernhardi, the Bernhard monkey, named after Prince Bernhard. This is the first time that he has discovered a new, large land mammal.

The genetic analysis was conducted by the Leiden Centre for Environmental Sciences (CML). Van Roosmalen’s research has been supported by scientists from Leiden, Germany and Belgium.

It smells okay. You don't see any fuzz on it. So what if that bottle of barbecue sauce has been sitting in the back of your fridge since July 4, 2003? And that frost-covered lamb chop that's been chilling in your freezer since last year — it's still good, right?

There's always going to be something of indeterminate age in your kitchen, and you may be tempted to sniff, poke, and then taste it. But not so fast — you could be taking a risk you'll regret. Each year, 76 million Americans fall sick with foodborne illnesses and 5,000 die of them, estimates the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of those illnesses are a result of improper food handling at home, which includes eating food that has spent too much time on the refrigerator shelf.

The fridge isn't the only problem spot, either. Food that's been in the freezer too long won't make you sick, but it certainly won't taste its best. And though canned and dried foods that are past their prime usually aren't a threat, they will lose nutritional value over time. (Eating food from a bulging can, however, could be potentially fatal because the swelling could signal bacterial contamination.)

"You can't count on sight or smell to tell you if food is safe or good to eat," says Elizabeth L. Andress, PhD, a food safety specialist at the University of Georgia. Pregnant women, young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to food poisoning, which can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, and body aches.

Food in the fridge
If a few items in your refrigerator have been there since the last millennium, you're not alone: When Tennessee State University researchers peeked into the fridges in 210 homes, they found moldy, spoiled, or outdated foods inside 24 percent of them.

"Many consumers don't understand that while refrigeration slows bacterial growth, it doesn't stop it," says Janet B. Anderson, RD, a clinical professor of nutrition and food sciences at Utah State University, who, when conducting a recent study, was horrified to find that 31 percent of respondents ate leftovers that were more than a week old.

The first step to ensuring the safety of your food supply is keeping track of when you purchased and opened each item. One easy way is to stash masking tape and a marking pen in the kitchen so you can label all edibles with "purchased on" and "opened on" dates. The next step is to pay close attention to the recommended storage times. But be warned: These are based on refrigerator temperatures of 40 degrees F and lower; anything warmer than that is a breeding ground for bacteria. In the Tennessee State study, an alarming 28 percent of the refrigerators were warmer than 40 degrees F. (For less than $12, you can buy a refrigerator thermometer that will help you keep food at the optimal temperature.)

Some refrigerated foods have expiration dates on their packages. But dating regulations vary from state to state, and many products come with no date at all. To avoid confusion — and possibly food poisoning — use the rules of thumb at the end of this article.

Food in the freezer
As long as food remains frozen, it will stay safe to eat. The flavor and texture, however, can deteriorate substantially over time, so you may want to think twice before serving your dinner guests that 2-year-old sirloin. Also keep in mind that freezing doesn't kill bacteria; it just puts them to sleep for a while. Once you thaw it out, follow the guidelines for refrigerated food.

Like refrigerator temperatures, freezer temperatures can vary. The recommended storage periods assume that your freezer is set at 0 degrees F. For every 5-degree increase in temperature, you should cut storage time in half. An important caveat: If you have the type of refrigerator with a small freezer compartment inside (one that doesn't have its own exterior door), don't keep anything in it longer than a week because these freezers cannot maintain temperatures as low as 0 degrees F.

Food in the pantry
Because pasta, rice, and other dried foods don't contain enough moisture for bacteria to thrive, and canned food is airtight, pantry storage is also more a question of quality than safety. Toss any cans that are rusting, leaking, or bulging, and always put newly purchased items on the back of the shelf, so you use the oldest ones first. Then heed the rules that follow. (Unless otherwise noted, they apply to opened products that are kept in airtight containers after opening.)

Lenovo announces a couple of workstations

Lenovo is the brains behind two more workstations - the ThinkStation S20 and D20. Both models were specially designed for specialized professionals who are involved in fields such as computer-aided design, digital content creation and oil and gas. These ThinkStation workstations are also the muscle behind its new e-commerce platform known as the Lenovo eLounge, which will provide customers with new, first-of-its-kind interactive way to experience Lenovo computing solutions online regardless of where they are in the world at that moment.

According to Tom Tobul, executive director, Enterprise, Software and Peripherals, Lenovo, “Designers, engineers, developers and scientists require the highest levels in computing performance to help them produce breakthrough innovations. The new ThinkStation workstations deliver not only the utmost in performance, but also a user-centric design with an emphasis on quiet operation, even during heavy processing.”

These workstations have been turbo-charged for performance, and can even be configured for personal supercomputing in order to help professionals innovate at a much faster pace than normal, which results in reducing the time between an idea and a product. It will be powered by the NVIDIA Tesla C1060 GPU platform, offering 240 more cores of dedicated math processing power in order to further speed up math calculations by a mile. Huawei Joins WiMAX Forum Board

Huawei Technologies has joined the board of the WiMAX Forum, a non-profit organisation in WiMAX standardisation and certification, shortly after having been appointed as a board member of the Open Patent Alliance (OPA), an organisation spearheaded by Intel Corporation to provide WiMAX intellectual property rights solutions.

Charge IPods And Cell Phones With A Wave Of The Hand

In research presented at the American Chemical Society's 237th National Meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah on March 26, scientists from Georgia describe technology that converts mechanical energy from body movements or even the flow of blood in the body into electric energy that can be used to power a broad range of electronic devices without using batteries.

"This research will have a major impact on defense technology, environmental monitoring, biomedical sciences and even personal electronics," says lead researcher Zhong Lin Wang, Regents' Professor, School of Material Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The new "nanogenerator" could have countless applications, among them a way to run electronic devices used by the military when troops are far in the field.

The researchers describe harvesting energy from the environment by converting low-frequency vibrations, like simple body movements, the beating of the heart or movement of the wind, into electricity, using zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowires that conduct the electricity. The ZnO nanowires are piezoelectric — they generate an electric current when subjected to mechanical stress. The diameter and length of the wire are 1/5,000th and 1/25th the diameter of a human hair.

In generating energy from movement, Wang says his team concluded that it was most effective to develop a method that worked at low frequencies and was based on flexible materials. The ZnO nanowires met these requirements. At the same time, he says a real advantage of this technology is that the nanowires can be grown easily on a wide variety of surfaces, and the nanogenerators will operate in the air or in liquids once properly packaged. Among the surfaces on which the nanowires can be grown are metals, ceramics, polymers, clothing and even tents.

"Quite simply, this technology can be used to generate energy under any circumstances as long as there is movement," according to Wang.

To date, he says that there have been limited methods created to produce nanopower despite the growing need by the military and defense agencies for nanoscale sensing devices used to detect bioterror agents. The nanogenerator would be particularly critical to troops in the field, where they are far from energy sources and need to use sensors or communication devices. In addition, having a sensor which doesn't need batteries could be extremely useful to the military and police sampling air for potential bioterrorism attacks in the United States, Wang says.

While biosensors have been miniaturized and can be implanted under the skin, he points out that these devices still require batteries, and the new nanogenerator would offer much more flexibility.

A major advantage of this new technology is that many nanogenerators can produce electricity continuously and simultaneously. On the other hand, the greatest challenge in developing these nanogenerators is to improve the output voltage and power, he says.

Last year Wang's group presented a study on nanogenerators driven by ultrasound. Today's research represents a much broader application of nanogenerators as driven by low-frequency body movement.

The study was funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Once upon a time, all you needed to tap into the wide world of TV was a TV--though a good set of rabbit ears didn't hurt. Internet video is way more complicated. Few networking tasks are more demanding than pumping video fast enough to avoid pauses, hiccups, and other glitches. So keep the following technical issues in mind before you cut up your Blockbuster card.

Broadband

The recommended minimum download speeds for the gizmos I used range from 1.5 mbps to 3 mbps. (Upload speed isn't an issue with Internet video.) A higher transfer rate is preferable, since many devices gauge your connection's performance and provide better quality over faster pipes. The key factor, though, isn't what your ISP claims it provides but what it actually delivers--especially if it's prone to periodic slowdowns.

Try a broadband measuring service like the one at Speedtest.net to double-check your real-world speed. That's particularly important for diskless devices like the Roku Digital Video Player, since they stream video as it arrives rather than storing it locally for later playback.

The best type of network for video streaming is speedy, reliable ethernet-except for the part about smashing holes in your walls and snaking vast quantities of cable everywhere. Powerline adapter gear such asthe $100 Netgear HDXB101 Powerline HD Ethernet Kit offers a simple alternative that uses your home's electrical wiring to bring the network from wherever your modem and router reside to your TV.

The kind of network you're most likely to have, however, is wireless. Most of the gadgets that I tried support Wi-Fi, at least optionally. You want 802.11g at bare minimum, and 802.11n if the video box you buy supports it. Wi-Fi is prone to performance and range problems that wire-based networks don't have. But truth to tell, I was pleasantly surprised by how well decent-quality video traveled over my 802.11n network.

The TV Itself

You want an HD flat-screen the size of a medieval tapestry, right? Maybe, if you're planning to watch high-quality, high-def content such as the 1080p titles offered by Vudu. But most Internet video exists in humble standard definition, and many HDTVs still do a lackluster job of stretching it to fill their extra pixels. You think YouTube looks lousy on your laptop? Try watching it on a 50-inch-diagonal screen.

Nokia N78 "over-the-air" software version 11.043 released - 23 June 2008

This "over-the-air" software release will not be available through the Nokia Software Updater application, but is available directly through your Nokia N78. The release includes improved stability with Bluetooth (headsets and car kits) and music (playback over a long time and content refresh). This release also includes optimized Camera performance and Naviscroll sensitivity improvements.

Technology innovations mean the size of this "over-the-air" update is approximately 2 MB. To get this software through your Nokia N78, click Menu > Tools > Utilities > Device Manager. Select Options > Check for updates and follow the on-screen prompts. Remember that you can also use Wi-Fi to download the update.

Nokia provides this software free of charge. However, costs for downloading may be charged by your network operator or service provider. Please contact them for information about pricing.

Mutinous Bangladesh border guards begin to surrender

Bangladesh's Home Minister Shahara Khatun received about a dozen automatic rifles from surrendering mutineers at the Dhaka headquarters of Bangladesh Rifles — the official name of the paramilitary border guards. TV reports showed guards filing out of buildings in the compound and laying down arms, one by one.

"The guards have begun surrendering arms after we have offered amnesty to them," Mr Khatun told said while leaving the compound, adding that he believed the surrender would be complete by the late morning.

The minister also oversaw the evacuation of about 50 women and children trapped in their homes inside the compound since the revolt erupted on Wednesday. They were mostly family members of officers who were attacked during the mutiny.

The guards had stormed the headquarters, opening fire on superior officers, and also seized a nearby shopping mall. Army troops were called in to surround both complexes, and the guards agreed to surrender when the government said it would grant them amnesty and discuss their demands.

There were conflicting reports about the death toll in the mutiny.

Hospital doctors confirmed that three bystanders killed and about 20 people injured.

But Junior Law Minister Quamrul Islam said that "It's our guess at least 50 people may have died" in the violence. His remarks came after a visit to the compound, but he acknowledged that the figure was unconfirmed. "We have not seen any bodies," he added.
